What is Somatic Education?

The word somatic refers to the body and the felt or lived experience of the body in the present moment. This would include such things as: physical sensations, breathing, muscular tension and tone, posture and alignment, facial expressions and movements.

In a more general sense “somatic” can also be considered as a process of using the body as a reference point for exploring our thoughts (concepts, beliefs, meanings, memories, desires), emotions, movements, actions and how we relate to the world and people around us. All of these things involve the body, happen in the body, and create changes in the body from moment to moment. Usually all of this stuff happens automatically, following patterns and habits, without us paying much attention to it. It happens below the level of consciousness. But, if we direct our attention to it, it can be noticed and studied. This process of noticing and studying our lived experience from moment to moment is called mindfulness or embodied awareness.

When we practice mindfulness all these patterns and habits start to become known to us and we are able to assess how they may be serving us or harming us. We can also begin to create a certain spaciousness where we can choose to do something differently rather than react blindly. The changes can be made via our thoughts, emotions and actions but again if we are working somatically we relate all of that back to the lived experience of the body.

So in Somatic Education we use the body as the reference point for learning about our unconscious and habitual patterns. Then we use that information that we’ve learned about ourselves plus any new information that we want to add to the system to create changes which lead to more pleasure, well being and empowerment.  ↑to top

What are the different ways to access the Massage By Ki somatic education services?

There are a number of different ways based on your comfort level and whether you are able to come to see us in person in Vancouver. We offer personalized services for women, men and couples. We also offer classes and workshops. If you are from out of town we offer long distance learning or we can travel to your location.  ↑to top

Who are Massage By Ki clients and what are they looking for?

Our clients are individual women and men (cisgendered and transgendered) and couples (heterosexual or not) of any sexual orientation (gay, straight, queer, bi, lesbian, undecided or unlabelled) who range in age from their early 20’s to their 80’s who want skills, confidence and healing to make their sexuality a source of pleasure, well being and empowerment in their lives.  ↑to top

What happens in a personalized session, class or workshop?

In the broadest sense you learn about yourself and something about sexuality that will give you more pleasure, well being and empowerment through a process that is somatic, safe, respectful, and most likely fun. The specifics really depend on your situation and what you want to learn. To get a better idea please see the Ki experience , our list of services for women , men and couples and our classes and workshops .   ↑to top

How long are personalized sessions and how many sessions will I need?

Personalized sessions are 1, 1.5 or 2 hours long. The number of sessions you’ll need really depends on lots of individual factors. Getting what you need to take your where you want to go might look like: a single session, several years of work doing multiple sessions a month or anything in between.  ↑to top

I need more information. How can I get it?

We offer a one hour question and answer consultation. This can happen in person or by phone. There is a small fee, $80. Just contact us to arrange a time.

You can also just email us your questions. If we can answer them easily, we will, no charge, our pleasure. If we feel a consultation is needed, we’ll let you know.  ↑to top

Our Vancouver studio is located in the westend in downtown Vancouver. We’re in a very safe, upscale neighbourhood with lots of shops and cafes. For the privacy of our clients, we only give out the address of our studio after we’ve confirmed their appointment.  ↑to top

Is there parking near your studio?

Parking and traffic can be a bit tricky. Give yourself a few extra minutes. You may get lucky and find some free 2 hour parking around. There is lots of pay parking nearby.  ↑to top

What is your studio like?

Our studio is discreetly located, tastefully decorated, clean, spacious, quiet and uncluttered. We keep the temperature comfortable for receiving massage. A private washroom and shower are available. ↑to top

Do you offer outcalls?

Do you travel outside of Vancouver and what are the fees?

Confidentiality, Safety and Boundaries

Are your services completely confidential?

Yes absolutely. We respect your privacy completely. We do not ask or require any detailed information about you other than a cell phone number and a first name. All communications and files are stored securely. ↑to top

What safety measures do you take?

The safety of our clients, both on a physical and emotional level, is of paramount importance to us. To start with, we make sure that your visit with us is completely confidential.

In session we always maintain a warm and caring attitude that’s free of judgment. We are experts at dealing with big emotions in ways that are healing and empowering.

Before engaging in any intimate educational process – especially anything involving touch – we will make sure that you are fully informed as to what is going to happen and that you have given us your enthusiastic consent. If consent and communication are challenging for you, we will work on that first before engaging in any touch. You are always free to change your mind. We don’t believe in “breaking through” boundaries and limits but rather exploring them gently and consciously.

We practice safer sex protocols.  ↑to top

What are your professional boundaries?

We are professional sex educators and want to be viewed as such.

Somatic sex education, because it’s so intimate and sensual, creates real attachments between client and teacher. However, as a guiding principle, what happens in the studio stays in the studio. We don’t engage with our clients outside of scheduled sessions.

We share many different intimate activities with our clients. They vary from client to client and moment to moment. However, again as a guiding principle, every activity must be something that you desire and we are willing to do. We will let you know, clearly and respectfully, where our boundaries are. ↑to top

Fee Structure

What are the fees for your services?

The fees for all sessions (except Relaxation massage which is $100/hr) done in our studio with Ki, for men are $150 for the first hour and $120/hr for each additional hour, and for women are $120/hr. Casey, Aurora and Sophia have their own fee structures. Please contact them directly for more information. If we are travelling to your residence or hotel in the downtown Vancouver area there is an additional one-time fee of $60 per practitioner or model. For destinations farther away please contact us.

If you’re a student or a lower income person and these fees are just out of the question for you, please contact us and we can discuss a lower fee or a payment plan. We do our best to make our services accessible to those who need them.  ↑to top

Can I use my extended health care benefits for your services?

No unfortunately we are not “registered”. That being said the going rate for registered sex therapists in Vancouver is $175-$205 per hour with extended health care benefits covering typically only $15-$25 per visit. Viewed in this light our fees are very reasonable.  ↑to top

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept Cash, VISA, and Mastercard. Cash is best. Charges to your credit or debit card will appear as Massage By Ki.↑to top

What is your cancellation policy?

There is a $25 fee for cancelling or rescheduling a booked session. We require 24 hours notice when cancelling a session otherwise full payment is expected.  ↑to top
